Y1 Weekly Update: Monday 12th September - Friday 16th September 2016

This Week

Next Week

English
We have read and enjoyed Cinderella.  We also compared short film versions to the story.
We will begin our next English unit, Instructions.
Maths
We looked at counting as a way of adding and subtracting.
We will be learning to tell the time to the nearest hour and half hour.
Topic
We pretended to be each other to find out what others think of us.  We completed lots of different activities to explore our interests and passions.
We will sort out our findings so they make sense to us.
PSHE
We considered the importance of sharing in the classroom and on the playground.
We will be talking about what makes a good friend.
Optional homework
There were some brilliant pieces of optional homework last week!  Thank you for helping your child work on these.

This week’s optional homework is to set up your toys /dolls/ bears on your bed for an audience and practice reading or singing in front of them.

Also, an ‘Interests Activity Checklist’ is being sent home today.  This gives a series of activities and asks whether it is currently in your child’s interests or if, in your opinion, would be interesting to your child.  If you have a couple of minutes over the weekend, it could facilitate discussions about your child’s interests.
Notices and Events
  • Our school trip to A Little Something Cooking School is on Thursday 6th October.  Thank you to parents who have returned the permission slips already.  If you have not done so, please do as soon as possible.  The trip sounds as though it is going to be fun!
  • Please be aware that, as per the school policy, if a child cannot swim, they will need a doctor’s note. No swim = no play: If a child cannot swim, they will not be able to play.
  • Homework will be given out on Monday and is due in on Friday.
  • As part of Y1C’s unit of inquiry, I am looking for people to come in and talk about their abilities and passions for five minutes. If you have a particularly interesting ability or passion, and do not mind joining our class and talking about it for a short while, please let me know.
  • Mr Renie’s weekly newsletter is now posted on  http://ascoteypynews.blogspot.com/ .
  • It has been expressed by some parents that they would like to be able to enter the primary building in order to see their child’s classrooms.  Whilst the policy of only primary children and teachers entering the primary building is going to remain for safety reasons, parents of children in Y1C are invited into our classroom on Mondays from 3.10pm - 4.00pm to discuss any issues concerning your child or to reflect on their work with them.   Apologies if you came last Monday and I was not there.  Because of the heavy rain, I was helping teachers on the ground floor safely send children home.
  • It has been great to see lots of parents checking on how many ‘Dojo points’ their child has been given.  We are not using the Dojo website as a way of communication between teachers and parents.  If you do have any questions or queries, please email me: ocallaghan@ascot.ac.th or catch me in the playground in the mornings or afternoons.
