Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car

Here's another favourite from my own childhood (yep, it's ancient!). The kids like the repetition in this story and also the animals voices.

Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car

Home learning - 29.3.16

This week we are focusing on cars as part of our transport topic. Today, in class, we made up our own licence plates using numbers that are familiar to us.
For home learning, I would like children to write down all the numbers they see around them at home. You'll be surprised how many numbers you have close by. Children can also make up their own licence plates; house numbers, and telephone numbers.
Have fun!

Here is Uss writing licence plates. He made up the numbers himself and then read them back.

Home Learning - 22.3.16

Recently we have been reading/recognising signs and text in our environment. The children are already reading/recognising many signs that are familiar to them, such as 7-Eleven.
For home-learning, I would like children to take photos of the signs and text that they can read from their environment. You could make the pictures into a book that can then be shared at school.
So, if you go walking, or to the mall, don't forget to take your camera!

Here's Meleah reading some familiar signs and logos. Great effort, Meleah!

Learning Journey Conference No:1

Today saw our first LJC! We welcomed Neasha's mum and dad, Summer's mum and dad, and Grandae's mum into our room.
The mums and dads helped us with our writing class - Thanks! And then they sat with their kids and discussed the learning journeys together.
The mums and dads all agreed that it was a great opportunity to see what their kids had been doing in school and what they were interested in.
I am looking forward to seeing the rest of you as the week goes on.

Welcome to NuNu!

On Monday we welcome a new student. NuNu will be joining RJ and hopefully she will have much fun with us!

Whatever Next!

The children are so engaged with the space topic that we have decided to continue with it for another 2 weeks.
This time around our focus book is Whatever Next by Jill Murphy. This is a lovely story about a Bear that goes to the moon in his cardboard box.

Here is another story that the children may also like: Meg and Mog go to the Moon. This is a story that I watched when I was a child (it's very old!).

Here are some class activities from last week and this week. Please ask your child to explain each picture to you as this will help with recall and language development.

Home learning - 15.3.16

For home learning this week I would like children to focus on practising key skills in reading.
Reading is a difficult set of skills to learn as children need knowledge of letter sounds, visual clues, rhyme, and patterns in text.
To help the children with their development, please help your child to read different words and sentences that you find around you. I good place to start is reading logos.

Alongside this, please continue to use the flash cards that we sent home earlier in the year. Daily practice of these will help children build up their visual bank of words.

And don't forget we have our Reading Magic club in the EY library on Mon, Wed and Thurs at 2.45 - 3/15 for KG and Reception children.

Home Learning - 11.3.16

The children have been making great progress in phonics over the last few weeks, no thanks to Mr. Thorne and Geraldine the Giraffe!

Please take some time to watch the following videos with your children so that they can practice the sounds covered in class. The children find the subtle difference between 'sh' and 'ch' difficult.

sh

ch

Once you have watched the videos, perhaps you could find items around your house to match each sound.

NASA Kid's Club Space Games

Here is a website that I stumbled across. The kids are really enjoying out space topic and this website would be a great way to enhance their knowledge and skills.

The children have enjoyed meeting Lecky and Friends this week. Please take some time to explore this website with your kids as there are many great games to support our topic and key skills.

I Spy with My Little Eye!

I Spy is an excellent game to play for young children as it helps them to learn letter sounds. We play this game regularly at school and the children really enjoy it.
Please try at home, in the car, on holiday! You can play it anywhere and it doesn't cost any money!

Ideas for I spy

This week's home learning - 1.3.16

For home learning this week you can choose one of the following activities:

Make a rocket or a flying saucer. You can use recycled items to building a rocket or flying saucer which your child can then bring to school. You can look on Pinterest for ideas.

Make a book about space. You could make a zig-zag book containing facts and pictures about space.

Make a NASA ID badge. We made one of these in school and the children wanted to make another one for home.

Class activities - Space!

We have now started a new topic on transport: Space. The children are very excited about the current topic and they already have a huge amount of knowledge on this subject.
Here are some activities that we have worked on so far this week:

Making our own space scene pictures.

 Building rockets using small blocks.
Building a spaceship using lego.
 Making a space party!
 Making aliens using playdough.
Building a moon scene using sand and foil.

Here are the links to our story and song.
