Review and preview


Y1 Weekly Update: Monday 24th  October - Friday 28th October 2016

English
We designed aliens and described them.
We will spell out cvc words and use these to write sentences.
Maths
We have counted in tens and twos and have halved shapes by folding them.
We will be doubling and halving numbers to 20, working out which numbers are odd and even and ordering and spelling the days of the week.
Topic
Y1C have been very creative and have used their imaginations expertly.  I have been particularly impressed with out they made houses, meals and toys for soft toy animals.  
We will be continuing to use our imaginations to express ourselves. Also, we will spend time learning the lines of the production songs.
PSHE
We have talked about sharing again and talking nicely to others.
We will talk about how important it is to be honest.

Notices and Events
  • Please be aware that, as per the school policy, if a child cannot swim, they will need a doctor’s note. No swim = no play: If a child cannot swim, they will not be able to play.  
  • Homework will be given out on Monday and is due in on Friday.  I update the Abacus Maths games every week.  This is the only Maths homework given so please make sure your child does play the games.

New Inquiry Unit

As part of our new Inquiry unit, Y1C used their imaginations to create houses for some of our toy animals.














Halving shapes

We have been folding shapes to cut them in half.










Guided Reading

Children have been decoding in order to read words.

Play any of the games already on your abacus account for at least 20 minutes.  If you cannot remember your login, ask Mrs O.
English
Read the story sent home and complete a book review.  Please return the book to receive a new one as soon as your child has finished their book.  
Phonics
This is a worksheet based on looking at which letter comes first.
Spellings
This week’s spelling words contain the b sound looked at throughout the week.

We were very inventive and made some awesome robots!  
We will look at sentence level work.
Maths
We practised counting, comparing and ordering numbers.
We will count in tens, compare and order numbers again and will half shapes by folding them.
Topic
We finished our posters and bravely presented them.
Our next unit is ‘How We Express Ourselves’. We will be using our imaginations to create a vehicle, animal, toy, meal and story.
PSHE
We completed role plays about how to manage our emotions.
We will talk about how important it is to be honest.
Optional homework
Find out about another country and record three facts that you discover.

We have followed pictorial instructions.
We will be following instructions to make robots.  Please bring in modelling equipment in order for us to make these on Tuesday!
Maths
We have used number lines to subtract.  
We will be comparing and ordering numbers, working out which numbers are larger and smaller, counting in multiples of 2s and 10s and finding halves of shapes.
Topic
We have planned out our posters.
We will be finishing our posters and presenting them.
PSHE
We discussed the supports we have around us.  We also thought about what responsibilities we have.
We will think about how we can responsibly manage our emotions through role play.
Optional homework
Imagine where your robot could go.  Draw a picture, cartoon or write a story about this.  
Notices and Events
  • Our school trip was a success - everyone had lots of fun!
  • As mentioned above, we will be following instructions to make robots out of junk.  Please collect and bring in as many newspapers, milk bottles, plastic lids, cereal boxes and any other clean junk you have lying around at home.  Photos will follow!
  • The  charity fair will be on Friday 14th October.  The stall we will be running is ‘Guess The Teddy’s Name’.  If you have any teddies that could be used for this, please bring them in.  Thank you.
